The butternut squash is part of the gourd family along with pumpkin, cucumber and melons. It features both a female blossom and a male blossom on the same vine, but they are too far apart to make a “baby squash”. They need help from bees to carry the pollen from the male flower to the female flower for pollination and to produce a squash. Also, almost all of the parts of the butternut squash plant are edible including the: fruit, leaves, flowers, and seeds.
