A question we regularly get asked is if we use supplements as part of our treatment protocols. Our answer is it absolutely depends on your genetics and your advanced biomarkers. What we find is that most individuals with chronic disease have some nutrient insufficiencies due to poor nutritional choices over the course of a lifetime or due to genetics relating to the absorption, activation, or usage of these nutrients. For those individuals, we do recommend supplementation or using medical foods until these nutrient insufficiencies are resolved.
That being said, we are firm believers that the nutrients we need for everyday living need to come from our food and our lifestyle choices. Taking a supplement is no substitution for healthy food and exercise choices on a daily basis.
At Healthy Living Dallas we will look at your genetics testing, your advanced biomarkers from your blood work, your health history, your medications, and your lifestyle choices and make supplement the supplement or medical food recommendations that we would make if we had your body and history. From there, the choice is entirely up to you!
If you choose to use supplements, we prefer Metagenics brand. Why do we have a particular brand we recommend? In the United States supplement manufacturing practices are not regulated. When using supplements clinically, as a natural treatment for disease or as a method of relieving nutrient insufficiencies, it is important that we know that the dosage that we’re recommending is what you’re actually getting. Many nutrients are dose-dependent, meaning that at certain doses they show clinical effects in research studies but at lower (or sometimes even higher doses) they show no effect. Metagenics has third party testing to ensure that what they claim is on the label is actually present at the point of expiration. In short, it’s our way of ensuring your peace-of-mind that you’re taking the amount that is best for your body and your disease states. Metagenics that is the brand we choose for our families and for ourselves.
